My hubs left at 4:30am this morning to go fishing with his BFF. When I realized that it would just be me and my little man (no pre-school on Fridays), I thought it might be a great day to take him fishing for a few hours! As I was getting the gear ready to go, I realized my hubs failed remove BOTH my pairs of wading boots from the waders ‘tub’ when he left — which made me bootless…so I made a trip to the fly shop to RENT a pair of wading boots. I can’t believe I actually had to do that when I own 2 pairs of wading boots, but I just didn’t want to go fishing without waders. I guess I can feel good about supporting a local shop tho right?
Anyhoo, a fashioned some tippet and a fly on the end of the Redington Form Game Rod so the little guy could practice throwing something around in the water. I’ve never tried Tenkara, but I imagine this set up was something like that since it didn’t have a reel…I just tied the end to the handle so he wouldn’t lose the line.
I managed my way out to the middle of the river and left him to do his ‘thang’ for a bit. 1 Rainbow trout later… the wind had picked up, little man had gotten his line stuck in a tree too many times and the snacks were all gone. He actually did quite well casting, but was still way too crazy to actually catch anything.
So we met Grandma for lunch.

My oldest daughter (Alexis) is 5….she fishes in the back yard with me in the lake, but I cant wait for another year or two when she will be able to get in waders and come hit the river with her old man! The family that fishes together, stays together
Love that you didn’t give up hope on the day by going to lunch with Grandma – too cute!!
He’ll love it for life! A nice gift, same as my dad gave me.
Grandma’s rock.
I think you need to pick up the Fishpond Cimarron bag. I have one. I have it packed with a change of clothes, wading jacket, waders, boots, wader socks, my wading underclothes, and a hat. Along with whatever gear I’m using for the season (saltwater/freshwater) I have it by my door at a moments of fishing invite notice from friends or when the mood arises. After every trip, I dry out my stuff and reload the bag! Works perfect!
Nothing better than to teach a child the wonders of the outdoors.
What a great day for the two of you. The simple things that make kids happy and busy for hours
Some of my best memories in life were of me fishing with my dad when I was a kid. My oldest son is 3 and I already take him hiking with me. I have already been shopping around and eyeing youth rods
. Can not wait to take my son on his first fishing trip! Great read!
That’s a great day!!! I started taking my little boy when he was 3. He is now 8 and caught his first trout this year without assistance from me. Of course, we manned up and wet waded in tennis shoes har har.
Great post.
Seems Like The Day Turned Out Pretty Good . Your Son Will Probably Be Great With A Mother Like You To Learn From . I Mean Hey We All Love Our Mommys . Lol Glad You Had A An Awsome Time , I’ve Never Been Fishing =\ Lol
I wish I would have started fly fishing that young.
It’s great you’re getting your kids out at a young age. Not mentioned the memories you will have!
This reminds me of how grateful I am for my dad taking me fishing at such a young age! He’ll be hooked for life! Fantastic
My little fella is now able to tell the difference between brookies, browns etc! He is growing so fast!! Won’t be long and he will be leaving this dad behind!!
Great stuff Jen!
I’m liking that Redington Form..seems like a great way to start a kid fly casting.
Looks like the rise of another fish taker and heart breaker.
Awesome pictures! Reminds me of what my dad used to do with me… he’d put a little fly reel on an ice rod so I had something to throw around. Glad to see you getting the little guy out there!
Awesome… I can’t wait to get out there with my son, we have fished spinning gear a lot together but nothing since I made the switch to fly.
Ah…to live in a place with a fly shop that rents boots!
