I’m writing this on my phone, so here it goes.
~I soon as my son got on the bus I loaded up the car – only to realize most of my fly gear was in my hubby’s car, so I raided his stuff and stuffed it into my new Vedavoo Utility Belt and took off.
~Just FYI – I did remember my SmartWool socks–(cotton socks suck in waders). But I forgot I had my jeans on. :/
~I also brought my new Korkers wading boots and Costa sunglasses.
~I got down to the river and realized:
#1- I forgot my sunglasses in the car
#2- I was slipping so bad in my new boots, I felt like I had snot rockets strapped to my feet.
It took me forever just to get a few feet out because I kept slipping so badly. I was so dang frustrated, I turned around and went back to the car. I retrieved my sunglasses and realized that my old Korkers were still in my car…the ones with the Goat Head Sole Spikes in them. So I changed boots. I AM NEVER WADING AGAIN WITHOUT SPIKES. The difference is huge!! As soon as I got back down to the river I was confident and comfortable walking around again. When my kids start wading, you can guarantee Sole Spikes will be installed in their boots.
I found a nice little rock sticking out in the middle of the river and took a seat. It was perfect spot for casting. The fish were rising like popcorn all around me. They were pesky picky fishies, but after a few hours I did manage to trick a few browns and rainbows into taking my fake bug.
Unfortunately I didn’t find any of those elusive brown-bows
I know the weather is going to change here soon, so I’m trying to get all the fair-weather fishing in that I can manage now that my kiddos are back in school.
It was a good day.

Amen to Goat Head Sole Spikes, they save lives. I slipped into a pool and if it wasnt for them, i wouldnt have grabbed the slimy boulder near the edge to walk out on…!
Spikes save lives!
Love wading boots with spikes! How do you like the tightening system on those boots?
Dale, I LOVE LOVE the Boa system on the boots. I actually really like this new style better than my old ones too – but I just need to put the spike soles on.
I’ll post more about the Korkers boots soon!
Well outfitted. The fish didn’t have a chance today. You could clearly see ‘em, safely get to ‘em and carry all the right bugs to fool ‘em.
Well said!
Costas are amazing. Looks like you’re set now
Go get ‘em!
Thanks Jon
SWAGGGGG!!! Are those the metalhead boots? I have the metalheads as well. I love em. I wish I got them in the right size. I got them a half size up, and it feels like I can’t cinch them tight enough.
I have the plain rubber soles, the rubber soles with the small studs, and the old korker style spikes. They make a world of difference. I only keep the rubber soles in the car so when I take a lunch break, I can go into a diner without getting out of my waders lol. Don’t laugh, there are places that don’t even flinch at you wandering in in chest highs as long as you don’t have spikes on.
Yup – the Metalheads!!
No spikes for me. Tear up the rocks so bad looks like I’m following loggers around the bend. But of course I slip and fall a fair bit:)
I suppose some rivers/lakes are more slippery than others – to each his own!
Great to see that you found some time to fish on a beautiful Front Range day! I’m with you on the spikes/studs for wading boots – they’re essential. Keep having fun!
Thanks Russ…maybe I’ll see you on the river one of these days.
I love my Costas too!
They’re pretty sweet!
I have Korkers but haven’t make the switch to spikes….on my list-
Do it!!
Glad you had the spikes with you. I think they would come in handy hear in the river too. I’ve slipped and slided a few times myself.
Get them!!
I have the Korkers as well. Those rubber soles are a recipe for disaster. Terrible. The felts work well…just got to make sure not to be carrying any invasives around.
I think Ryan (above) has the right idea. The plain rubber soles are good for walking around in…not for wading. My ‘old’ Korkers are actually felt with spikes in them. It will be interesting to try the rubber with the spikes.
Wow, sounds like one of my days fishing. I usually have to run back to the car a few times to grab items I forgot. I need to invest in some spikes. I have never used spikes. Is there a specific pattern for installing the spikes?
Angleo,
You can install them any way you’d like…but here’s a nifty page on ‘How to Install’ http://www.solespikes.com/our-product/how-to-install/
I don’t know if I’m sold on the spikes yet. I really like my new Simms with the vibram soles. But, there is not a better pair of glasses on the market than Costa!
Charles, I’ve never tried the Vibram soles, so I can’t compare on that – but the sunglasses are definitely top notch!
LOve the Boa lace system and my Korkers!!
<3 Korkers <3
Nothing is worse than hitting the water and realizing you forgot your sunglasses! I haven’t tried spikes on my wading boots yet, but I probably should. I have terrible balance!
I seem to always forget something, and most of the time it’s my sunglasses – grr.
I have been there too…frankensteined gear and the will to catch fish is all you need. Strong work.
Thx Philip!
looking forward to getting Korkers w/ the Boa lace system and maybe new waders next weekend at Unicoi at Helen, GA. Need to look at Costa’s!
Ohh a shopping trip for fishing gear…lucky!!
I have a pair of Korkers and love them, but I might look into spikes!
You take great pictures.
Thank you!
I too have Korkers & very much love them. I only have felt bottoms now, but will be getting spikes soon as I don’t want to worry about evasive species hitch hiking!
Brenna – I have the felt soles with the spikes on my old boots. It will be interesting to see if rubber with spikes is more or less slippery.
Nothing better than studded felt. IMHO. And you got the right waders on there Jen. But why do you need a zipper?
Mike, I don’t NEED a zipper – but it does making getting in/out of them a lot easier.
I dont think I could ever wade in felt boots again. I have been using Simms boots for quite some time and have had some really good luck. I did get my dad some Goathead Spikes for his Korkers and they seem to work really well. I will say this….you were out fly fishing and I was at a funeral today….I would have rather been in slippery boots
Never had spikes in my boots. Might have to try them.
Saw that picture on instagram the other day, nice to hear the story that goes along. Where do you live in CO??
Just about spat my coffee out….”snot rockets” lol!
Sole Spikes are awesome!!! I’ve been using them all summer.
I need to figure out how to do that photo effect where you edit the together. Very cool way to share the story of you day out.
I use an app on my iPhone called PicFrame.
Awesome pics saw them on Instagram and had to get a closer look =)
Thanks for stopping by Roy!
Great post/report! Any day fishing is a great day
Thanks to Instagram for letting me know about this great site! Keep those pics coming.
Thanks for coming over to the website!
Gah, I’ve had days like that in the river. Slipping so much and falling in up to my arm pits to loose 1/2 my flies and feeling bruised. I was bruised the next day. I am humbled often while fishing, or trying to fish! My kids are not in school all day yet but getting close and I dream of the afternoon where I can have a few hours of fishing without having to go on the weekend or at night
