I got a chance to hang out with Kara Armano from Backbone Media and Simon Gawesworth from RIO (take a look at our first encounter) at the IFTD show this last weekend. I wanted to share with you what I’ve learned AND I also have a giveaway for you at the end!
So what’s new?
The most obvious and delightful change is their new logo~ so fresh and cheerful, I totally dig it. Take a look at their inviting booth. Loved the fishy touches!

RIO also added the addition of two new sophisticated and radically advanced proprietary technologies. These technologies, called MaxFloat and MaxCast, are being added to three of RIO’s highly respected and best-selling trout lines, the RIO Gold, RIO Grand and Trout LT lines, creating lines that anglers will now love even more.

TELL ME ~ If you were Chuck Norris, Agent 007 or Bear Grills etc. How would you use your fly line or have you ever used it in a ‘situation’ for some other purpose other than catching fish??
Examples:
-
I used it to tie up the polar bear I knocked out with my shoe.
-
I’d use it as a rope on my pulley system to hoist up the buried treasure I found while fishin’
AND THE WINNER IS:

I used it as parachute cord along with a bed sheet to BASE jump out of the castle tower after I rescued the princess.
#1
I’d use it to tie down my three eighteen year-olds (yes, triplets!) down for supper together. It’s sometimes hard to coordinate space/time to have family dinner.
#2
I would make a noose and throw it over a tree, then wait for a Leprecaun to come by
#3
well, i would use it to fish….
#4
Wrapped it around my work keyboard to hold a bunch of keys down so the system thought I was at my desk while secretly fishing.
#5
I used a fly line once on an 8 day float in Alaska to make a bent sapling leg snare. I saw a large mink patrolling our campground and I admired his thick coat… So I set a snare multiple nights and each night the bait was gone. Final score; Mink 3, Snare Man 0.
#6
I’d use my line to set trip lines right above the stairs so when the bad guys are chasing me, I’d lure them towards thestairs and jump over it, only to see them rolling head first down the stairs.
#7
In an attempt to ingrain the idea of fly fishing, I gave my son a spool of it to play with. (Under supervision of course).
It was his favorite toy for a good month. He would drag it around the house, shake it till he could shake no more, and share it with me many times.
Chuck Norris has kids, too.
#8
I would use the line to rig up the dummy I’ve created and make it more life like and movable, so I can use it in the Car Pool Lane and get to my fishing spots during rush hour!
#9
I used it to repel down from a helicopter while on Seal Team 6….Needless to say, we got Bin Laden.
#10
I’d fashion a halter and reins and ride a wild stallion into the mountains. Only to unravel the fly line and land a 25″ golden trout on a fly made from the stallion’s mane and the thread off of my lucky fishing shirt.
#11
I’d use it to rappel down the side of a rocky embankment to access a beautiful pool that I haven’t been able to reach all summer!!
#12
I’d knit a blanket with it.
#13
I knit a sweater out of it.
#14
I would probably use for its main purpose first on a new fly rod I just reeled in! However, another thought would be to use it to weave a nice fly line bracelet that I could wear every day even when I am not fishing!
#15
What wouldn’t I use it for…..use it to build a raft, build shelter, make traps, make fancy survival bracelets….the list is endless…
#16
I would make a snare trap, so when the fly line winner . When they are caught I would grab the fly line…
#17
Fly lines in use all over my house, gear and clothing. Clotheslines, lines for tent fly, tippet spool, zipper handles, sunglasses lanyard, hat lanyard for salt. Two out of the ordinary uses: to open humidity-stuck cabinets by attaching to latch and yanking. Easy on hands with gloves and latch and unbreakable. And to remove embedded hook via “push down shank and hook line around hook bend” method…easier on hands than using mono!
#18
007, Chuck Norris? Those guys can’t put a fly line to use like a fly fisher can who fishes Alaska, Colorado and its surrounding states through four different seasons 150-175 days a year. Any other use of a quality fly line is a waste of a good fly line! Priorities people, what’s more important than being able to catch that next fish? Tug really is the drug!
#19
After surviving a Titanic-esque luxury cruise wreck (without the iceberg), I would use my fly line to harness two sea turtles a la Jack Sparrow and arrive at the small deserted island that appeared in the hazy distance. After arriving, I would discover that I had been preceded by Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Marisa Miller. The poor girl would be distraught by the recent events, and like a gentleman I would repair her broken bikini strap with a snippet of fly line. After that, I would begin construction of a serviceable para-sail designed to be snatched in a Skyhook ex-filtration operation with braided fly line as the cable. The GPS transponder embedded under my left shoulder blade would guide the rescue mission directly to us, and we would leave in spectacular fashion.
Afterward, I would weave the tattered remnants of the line into a necklace replete with a rare and beautiful shell I had kept from the island to give to Marisa. Then I’d go order a martini. Shaken, not stirred.
#20
Makes for a great clothesline after attempting class 4 water in a class 1 kayak….
#21
I’d use it as a zip line to get to some prime fishing spots in a deep canyon!
#22
I used it to tie a lasso, and lassoed a wild mustang when I told it we where going fly fishing it dropped its head yeilding for me to get on and we rode to a backcountry stream where as far as you could see lips kissed the surface of the water.
#23
I would use it to start a fire by wrapping it around the tip of a stick. It is what Bear Grylls would do too!
#24
Id lace my clears and pads with it for football and become a superhuman unstopable beast
#gogrizzlies!
#25
I would use it to retrieve all the fly rods, fly boxes, nippers, nets, sunglasses, beers, and hemos that the rich guys dropped.
#26
I use my old line to lace up a new bag on the ol net.
#27
I’d use it to bunjee jump off the Eifle Tower!
#28
In a tough situation, you should always utilize the “strengths” of the materials at hand. Considering the pinpoint castability of Rio Gold, you might use it to cast a life-jacket to a man overboard….or a slab of bacon to a hungry bear, luring him into your hand-dug bear pit. Where ever I go, Rio Gold goes in my survival kit!
#29
I would use this fine Rio Gold line to loom a sweater of the finest quality to wear as I run through the valley saving the field mice from Little Bunny Foo Foo.
#30
I’d use my fly line to tie up the kid so that she’d quit running around so much!
#31
I use it as laces on my wading shoes and are able to cross any river.
#32
Love RIO stuff!
#33
I’d use my line to tie up all bait dunkers around here that like to leave worm buckets on the banks.
#34
David Carradine?
#35
I recently replaced my fly line and picked up the Rio Gold- I like it! If I were 007 I’d use it like Army 550 parachute cord. In the next greatest thing to duck tape. Multiple uses.
#36
I would use it to drag a lake home with me at the end of the day so I could keep fishing without getting in trouble from “she who must be obeyed” about being away too long!!
#37
Uses for my old fly line after replacing it with Rio Gold: hold up my pants; weave a web to catch the bear raiding my trash; a trip line to mess with the deer eating my flowers; s cloths line; line for a knot video; a tail to attach to my car bumper; and friendship bracelets.
#38
I’ve never used Rio line mostly cause it’s a little high on the price scale, but have heard it is very good. I mostly throw anything from Orvis thats on sale at the outlets. I like your site very cool….
#39
I’d tie a line to the hearts of all the people I love so they can NEVER go away.. naaah, that sounds stalkerish.
I’d just go fishing with Tony!
#40
Love the Rio Gold! I just bought a 3 Wt and it is great! Thanks for all of these contests Jen!
#41
I love RIO products!
#42
I want that line! I love what Rio has done with their new site and marketing strategy, it really helped push them ahead of most others in the game!
#43
I’d use the fly line as a camera strap!
#44
Id use it to pull myself up some epic Rocky Mountains to catch some high mountain cutties!!!
#45
Easy. Use it to wrap a package to send to CO containing 2 round trip airline tickets to The Seychelles for Jen and hubby, along with a nanny for the kiddles.
#46
I’d use it on my Snook trip
#47
Chuck Norris doesn’t use fly line, he tells trout to get the hell in the net and they obey.
#48
I recently made up an elaborate story about building a raft that was held together with fly line
